CPU(click to show)

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, and is essentially the brain of your computer. It's where all the computations happen that make your computer work. The CPU is located on the motherboard, and is usually around 2-inches square. In most computers the CPU will be covered by a fan connected to a metal block (called the heatsink), which keeps the CPU from overheating and also hides the CPU from view. There are many different types of CPUs available, and there are many manufacturers, as well. The biggest two manufacturers are Intel and AMD. CPUs are classified by socket, and speed. The socket is what type of base the CPU attaches to on the motherboard, and the speed (most commonly in gigahertz, or GHz) is a rough estimate of how fast the CPU can run under ideal conditions (the higher the number, the faster the CPU).
